Our literacy block consists of Reader's Workshop, Writer's Workshop, and Language Craft and Skills block.
Reading and Writing Workshop follow a similar pattern and is probably very familiar to our Steck families. - Daily mini lessons - Interactive read-alouds and shared readings - Independent reading and writing - Reading and writing conferences: individual meeting with teacher - Guided small group instruction and discussions - Partner and small group collaboration - Written responses to literature - Integration of technology with student work
Language Craft and Skills Block This time of the day focuses on conventions (grammar, punctation, spelling) and vocabulary word study.
Assignments/ Assignment Expectations
Please refer to each student's planner and homework folder to access homework assignments.
Homework will almost always consist of the following: - Reading for a minimum of 20 minutes daily and record in their reading logs - Study weekly spelling words (Please refer to the spelling support page.) - Reviewing the weekly conventions skill through a variety of assignments. - Occasional writing assignments
There will also be additional assignments and final projects for each genre studied to support their growth as readers and writers. Students will be given a due date as well as a rubric to indicate the requirements of the assignment.
Friday Folders: Anything that goes home to the students is filed in the homeroom file basket outside of the class. A parent volunteer stuffs the folders every Friday. The afternoon class passes out the folders on Friday. The students return the folders every Monday to the homeroom return box.
